In 1955, Marshall Fredericks was commissioned to design and cast five Family and Justice bronze reliefs for the probate court rooms in the Coleman A. Young Municipal Center (CAYMC) in Detroit, where they remain today.

Four of the Family and Justice plaster reliefs were discovered in a storage area in the CAYMC in 2010 by a staff member of the Detroit-Wayne Joint Building Authority. Offered to the Marshall M. Fredericks Sculpture Museum by the executive director and trustees of the Building Authority in March 2011, the Board accepted the gift into the Museum collection shortly thereafter.

A $12,000 grant from the Alden and Vada Dow Family Foundations in Oct. 2012 for the restoration of the four reliefs made it possible to contract with Scott Slocum, Marshall Fredericks’s long time assistant, to restore them. Restoration of the first relief is complete.

After two years of hard work, the Marshall M. Fredericks Sculpture Museum was recently awarded accreditation from the American Alliance of Museums.

Below is a fact sheet that explains what it means to be an accreditated museum.

Accreditation Facts

There are 1,005 accredited museums in the United States.

That means that just 6% of the estimated 17,500 museums in the country are

accredited.

Simply, accreditation is the Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval

Accreditation is a self-motivated process; museums take it upon themselves to seek

accreditation.

The process involves a thorough self-study of all museum operations ─ financial,

governance, public programs, community engagement, collections stewardship,

security, etc. This is followed by a similar study by an outside peer reviewer, a museum

professional. Both studies are honest and straightforward appraisals. These two reports

are evaluated by the Accreditation Commission (another group of seasoned museum

professionals, at which point a decision is rendered.

AAM Accreditation is the field’s primary vehicle for quality assurance, self-regulation,

and public accountability, and earns national recognition for a museum for its

commitment to excellence in all that it does: governance, collections stewardship, public

programs, financial stability, high professional standards, and continued institutional

improvement. Developed and sustained by museum professionals for 35 years, AAM’s

Museum Accreditation program strengthens the profession by promoting practices that

enable leaders to make informed decisions, allocate resources wisely, and provide the

best possible service to the public.

To be accredited signifies a museum meets and often exceeds the standards and best

practices of the museum field.

Accredited museums encompass the breadth of America’s museums – art, children’s,

history, historic sites, natural history, science and technology centers, public and

botanic gardens, zoos and aquariums.

Accredited museums range from some of the world’s best-known institutions – the

Metropolitan Museum of Art, the California Academy of Sciences – to smaller museums

in all 50 states, such as the Montana Historical Society and the North Museum of

Natural History at Franklin & Marshall College in Pennsylvania.

What do the telephone, the Ferris Wheel, a 28,000-pound typewriter, and nylon stockings have in common? They were just a few of the thousands of featured products, curiosities, and inventions that made their debut at one of the 17 international festivals on American soil. From the practical to the peculiar, the events and displays of World’s Fairs shaped and reflected our American experience and promised a better standard of living for all.

Centuries of Progress: American World’s Fairs, 1853-1982 from Hagley Museum and Library presents a remarkable overview of the fairs, from the Crystal Palace Exposition in New York to the World’s Fair in Knoxville Tennessee. Approximately 125 objects, photographs, and ephemera detail more than a century of progress, promotion, and public response.

The history of the fairs is related through thematic categories: Progress as a Way of Life introduces the rationale for the creation of World’s Fairs. Marketplace of Ideasdemonstrates the immense opportunity manufacturers had to market new inventions, while Consumerism depicts fair-goers as an eager audience for innovative goods, from Juicy Fruit to Wonder Bread and Dr Pepper. Art, Architecture and Music and Popular Amusements illustrate the vast entertainment options, from colossal buildings and sculptures to carnival rides and exhibitions of “exotic” lands and cultures. Finally, Remembering the Fair includes souvenirs and commemorative items. After all, who could go home empty-handed after experiencing the wonders of a World’s Fair?
